Powerball expands to the UK, Saturday’s jackpot hits $600 million

LANSING, MI -- The largest Powerball jackpot of the year is up for grabs Saturday night, but the winner might not even be from the United States. As of July 22, Powerball has expanded to the United Kingdom and allows for those players to win the game’s jackpot prize.
The expansion comes as part of an agreement between the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) and Allwyn UK. The MUSL operates the Powerball game in 45 U.S. states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

While players in the U.K. are eligible to win the jackpot, smaller prizes are not paid out by the MUSL.
Each ticket sold in the U.K. will contribute the same fixed U.S. dollar amount per play to the jackpot pool as tickets purchased in the United States. U.K. players will have a separate lower-tier prize structure and payouts," Powerball officials said in a press release.
Officials say that keeping a majority of the ticket sales in the jurisdiction where they’re purchased was a critical part of the agreement.
“Just as importantly, this expansion does not change where the money goes,” Paul said. “Every Powerball ticket sold in the U.S. will continue to support programs and services right here at home.”
The expansion of the game does not change the odds or prize amounts available in the U.S.
While players in the U.K. can win the grand prize, they do not have the same options for collecting as those in the U.S. If a U.K. player wins, they must accept the annuity payments which will be spread out over 30 years. There is no cash option available for U.K. players.
Saturday’s Powerball drawing is worth $600 million, but the jackpot in the U.K. is worth £322 million.
The last tme the Powerball jackpot was won came on May 2 when a player in Florida and a player in Texas split the $20 million jackpot.
Powerball drawings take place every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday night at 10:59 p.m. ET. Tickets cost $2 each.
Powerball is offered in 45 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the U.K. Players select five white numbers from 1 to 69 and one red ball from 1 to 26. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292 million.
