Playing the lottery in Massachusetts is now easier than ever.
The Massachusetts State Lottery has launched new online games through its mobile app, giving players a new way to participate without buying a physical ticket.
The launch brings digital lottery games to Massachusetts after similar options have already been available in other states including Rhode Island for years.
Players must be at least 21 years old and must be located in Massachusetts to play the online lottery games.
“Registration is all through verification, similar to what you would do for a bank account,” Massachusetts Lottery Chief iLottery Officer Christian Teja said.
Lottery officials say they took player safety into account when launching the new system. The app includes tools that allow users to set spending limits, play limits, and time limits while using the platform.
The state said revenue generated from online sales will help fund grants for early childhood education. Teja says early projections estimate the program could bring in about $70 million after its first full year, with revenue expected to grow over time.
Meanwhile, revenue generated through retail sales will continue to be put towards cities and towns, in the form of unrestricted local aid.
In Rhode Island, revenue from both online and retail lottery sales support the state's general fund.
The Lottery also plans to add more games in the future, including virtual horse racing.
