Governor Janet Mills has signed LD 2007.
US.- Governor Janet Mills has signed a bill banning online sweepstakes games in Maine. LD 2007, titled An Act Regarding the Prohibition of Online Sweepstakes Games, defines operating or promoting an online sweepstakes game as unlawful gambling.
The bill was introduced in December by Sen. Craig Hickman. It defines sweepstakes as an internet-based game or promotion that uses a dual-currency system and produces casino-style gaming, including slot machines, poker and other table games, lottery games, bingo or sports wagering.
The legislation contemplates fines ranging from $10,000 to $100,000, which will be distributed to the Gambling Addiction Prevention and Treatment Fund. Maine is the second state to approve a ban on sweepstakes casinos in 2026, following Indiana.
