DES MOINES, Iowa — One fairgoer at the Iowa State Fair could win the lottery and be a part of an attempt to break a Guinness World Record.
The Iowa Lottery will try to break the world record for the most people scratching scratch tickets at the same time during this year's Iowa State Fair. The event is part of its 40th anniversary celebration.
On Thursday, Aug. 14 at 5:15 p.m. at the Elwell Family Park at the fair, the Lottery will try to gather enough people to break the previous record, which is 550.
Participants will receive a free scratch ticket that is a throwback ticket of the Iowa Lottery's first product, a 2025 version of the "Scratch, Match & Win!" game. The original game was launched at the Iowa State Fair in 1985, where the Iowa Lottery began its sales with a kick-off.
How to Participate
Fairgoers 21 and older who want to participate in the attempt can go to the Elwell Family Park on Aug. 14. Walk-up entry will begin at 4:30 p.m. Participation will be limited due to venue capacity, and spots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Participants who signed up in advance through the Iowa Lottery VIP Club will also take part in trying to beat the previous world record.
All participants will get a free scratch ticket, which offers prizes of up to $50,000. They will also be entered into a drawing held right after the record attempt. One prize of $40,000 and two prizes of $4,000 will be awarded.
