New bill proposes new powers against illegal online gaming in Iowa

The Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing has proposed granting the Racing and Gaming Commission authority to tackle unlicensed sites.

US.- The Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing has filed a bill that proposes to grant the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission authority to tackle unlicensed gambling sites. The proposal has been filed in advance of the 2026 legislative session, which begins January 12.

If passed, the bill would give the commission authority to issue cease-and-desist orders to unregulated gambling operations. Tina Eick, the regulator’s administrator, has said that under current law, the commission does not have the “clear authority” to take action against anyone other than the casinos and sportsbooks that it licences.

Eick is reported as saying: “We have a strong regulatory system that ensures the games are fair. We hold those operators accountable – their information and their funds are secure, and then they have responsible gaming, self-exclusion programs in place, and then we tax them. They pay their fair share of taxes to Iowa.”
